Keystroke to send

Craig Deutsch

Kevs, if you click New mail item and then look at the Message menu, does the
Post Message Now item have a keyboard short next to it, i.e. Command-Return?
If yes, then somehow it's been corrupted.

If so, then it's possible your preferences file
([User]:Library>Preferences>com.microsoft.Entourage.plist) is corrupt.

1) Close Entourage
2) Locate this file and move it to the desktop
3) Restart Entourage. It will create a new preferences file.
4) Open a new mail item, send yourself an email and see if the keyboard
shortcut works.
5) If this doesn't solve the problem, then trash the new preferences file
and put your old file back in to the folder above.

An alternative to forcing Entourage's correct behavior can be applied from
within System Preferences. First, close Entourage. Then do the following:

1) Open System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse.
2) Click on the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. Down near the bottom is a section
called Application Keyboard Shortcuts. Create a new one for Entourage by
clicking on the "+" icon.
3) From the ensuing menu, choose Microsoft Entourage. If Entourage doesn't
appear in the default list, then click "Other" from the last item in the
menu and navigate the Applications directory to find Entourage.
4) In the Menu Title box, type the following exactly, respecting CAPS:
"Post Message Now" (no quotation marks)
5) In the Keyboard Shortcut box, hit the command you want to use
(Command-Return).
6) Click Add.
7) Close the System Preferences.

Then re-launch Entourage. Try the step with creating a new email to
yourself and using the keyboard shortcut you just established. It should
work.

If all that doesn't work, then I suggest that maybe another MVP has more
knowledge about this.

Command return is no longer sending. Any ideas thanks!

Do other keyboard shortcuts work, or are they all dead? This occasionally
happens - there's nothing for it but to quit an re-launch Entourage.

I agree with Paul. This happens intermittently to me too. It never is a
permanent problem and will usually fix itself after cycling the app.

This not only happens to me all the time, it's now fairly permanent,
using Entourage 2004.

Restarting and trashing Entourage .plist files help, but within the
hour, Command-Return does not work. Oddly, if I continue hitting it 4-6
times, in rapid succession, the message *always* eventually gets sent
out. It's the strangest behavior, and people always look at me funny
when I'm doing it.

A couple of notes on Craig Deutsch's suggestions:

I don't think that's true. The Command-Return shows regardless of if
the shortcut is working or not.

Two notes on Craig's sequence:
1. In Entourage 2004, it is Menu: Message: Send Message Now
2. Apple's Keyboard Shortcuts doesn't seem to be able to accept
Command-Return. It'll take a letter, or number, but not the Return key.
I hope someone can prove me wrong on this, because I do think this
could fix the behavior. But so far, Command-Return won't stick.

You haven't answered yet with respect to _other_ keyboard shortcuts, but it
looks like the problem is restricted to this one? How about other shortcuts
involving command key? Does your Return key work OK in text windows? How
about using the _other_ command key? I'm wondering if there's a problem with
one of your keys.

Do you get the same problem with command-Enter in Entourage? Use only
command-Enter for a while. Try both command keys.

It sounds to me as if maybe there's just a delay before a message is sent,
which is not too unusual. Do you ever have this problem when selecting the
Send Message Now menu item in Message menu? (This will be more meaningful
than pressing the Send Now button, but there too?)

Other shortcuts involving the Command key work. Return key, by itself,
works fine. And yes, both the other Command key and the Enter key work
perfectly. All which would make one think the problem is in that
left-side Command key. However, a fresh install of Office 2004 on my
PowerBook 1.3Ghz is seeing the identical behavior as described. All key
combos work, except the left side Command key/Return combo. Again: this
combo works for the first hour after trashing the plist file and
restarting. After an hour or so, though, it's back to 4+ repeats and
then working. Both on my G5 and PowerBook.

I don't expect a fix on this one, and actually, I'd never tried the
Enter key before your suggestion, so I may try to rewire my pavlovian
brain to do that instead. But I have read about this particular
shortcut glitch with other Entourage 2004 users.

I do wonder, though, if there is a way to get the Apple's Keyboard
Shortcut to accept the Return key. I'd bet that would override/fix the
problem. Also, I temporarily tried using QuicKeys to remap it, (using
the Message Menu) but it was too slow to respond each time.

No worries. Plenty of other things to fret about, and I still love
Entourage.

I don't believe I ever have. My guess is that there's some sort of conflict
from a 3rd-party utility - like QuicKeys. Turn off QuicKeys or uninstall it,
and try. Also any other similar utility and especially "haxies". Try
starting up with Shift key down to turn them all off.
