Bosco

What do I have to do to make English my default? I ahve already exhausted all
avenues from the help file.

Open a document in which this problem occurs. Press Ctrl+A to
select all of the text. Click on Tools | Language | Set Language
| <choose your language> | uncheck the "Detect language
automatically" and "Do not check spelling or grammar" boxes |
Default | OK.

This change will affect the current document and all new
documents you create from this point forward. You will have to
make this change individually in your existing documents.

To garfield-n-odie Thanks for your tip. Unfortunately Welsh still appears as
the language setting even though I have removed it from the enabled list.

Thanks Peter, but that avenue also reaches a dead-end. No matter what setting
I try I always arrive back at Welsh!!

Hi Bosco,

You may want to also post this in the Word spelling & Grammar
newsgroup as well (link below) and list the things you've tried
and your Windows, country and Word version configuration. Sometimes
it can be a corrupt registry key that will affect this.

Just out of curiosity what language is set in IE\Properties\General\Language which is at the bottom of that page

Problem Solved! I opened Control Panel/Regional & Language
Options/LanguagesTab/Details and listed under Settings there it was. Welsh.
How this setting came to be changed from my original default of English (UK)
I have not the faintest idea. Many thanks for all the help. Bosco
