Latency or slow client response with Exchange 2003

I have been getting slow responses in the Entourage 2004 client when
connected to an Exchange 2003 server.

Are there particular settings to check or uncheck to improve the latency
time? Clients type and the SPOD (spinning color ball) comes up and takes
5-10 seconds to go away and display typed characters? What can be the cause
or fix for this?

Hos big is your account ?? There are two things that I saw greatly
infering with speed in Entoruage:
- a very large Exchange account
- numerous contacts with numerous e-mails (eg: mailig lists) being
placed into projects.
