Limiting text input in text boxes

Hi
I have created a text area for users to enter text in an asp page - I have
used some javascript to limit the number of characters permitted but if the
user presses enter to get a new line, this is not counted. As a result, the
text area expands (scroll bars appear at the side) Is there a way of
preventing the appearance of the scroll bars so the user absolutely cannot
exceed the space I have created? Thanks in advance

The limiting of characters in a text area means the *total* number of
characters - regardless of the number of lines. i.e. 500 chars is still 500
chars whether on 1 line or 15 lines.
