link external excel cell to text box shape

I'm trying to link simple text box shapes to an external data source (perferably an excel spreadsheet cell, but csv text would be ok too) so that the contents of the cell would be displayed in the visio drawing as text contents. This so I can build a formated table inside visio with external data.

I've spent a couple hours trying to get link to database, etc by way of tools->add-ons->visio-extras->XX with no success.

any pointers?

I'd start with David Edson's book since he has some good examples of office
integration in it, and one of them has an embedded excel spreadsheet so you
don't have to fool with tables (assuming that would be acceptable).
