if the source cell is blank as in no middle initial in a
name, why does the linked cell shoe "0" instead of blank?
can the source formula be formatted so that the linked
cell will also be blank if the source cell is blank?

Hi
another solution would be to use a formula like
=IF('sheet1'!A1<>"",'sheet1'!A1,"")

Link on same sheet.....

=IF(A1="","",A1)

Link on other sheet.....

=IF(Sheet1!A1="","",Sheet1!A1)

Alternative.......Tools>Options>View. Uncheck "zero values"
