linking and autoflow

I am trying to insert a word document and would like it to
be linked. I can insert it as an object (which is than
linked) or I can insert it as a text file (which has
autoflow) but I can't seem to do both.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I think what you want to do is have text autoflow from one column (or page)
to another column (or page). Assuming this is what you want, here we go (in
Publisher 2000).

On column 1 (page 1) make a text box.
On column 2 (page 2) make a text box.

Back on column 1 (page 1) click on the text box area so the adjustment black
boxes appear.
Now look up on the tool bar and click on the chain link icon (Connect text
frames) and the cursor changes to a steaming tea pot. Put the cursor over
column 2 (page 2) and the tea pot tips. Left click and the columns (pages)
are connected and text will auto flow from 1 to 2. The one think to
remember is column/page 1 can't be full to do this operation. If column/page
1 is full and you want to connect, lengthen column/page 1 until there is
vacant space then you will be allowed to do the autoflow operation.
it setup so that if I change the original word document it
will also change the version contained in publisher.

The closest you can get to this is to have a linked Word document, with each
link showing a different page.
