Links to MVP archive and notes page??

B

Bill Weylock

Many times I have been referred to help and FAQs on the MVP web pages, and
once or twice I have been taken gently to task for asking a question that is
covered extensively there.

Had a question tonight and figured I would check out those pages first.

Someone want to tell me where on the MS support pages there is a link to
those FAQs and articles? I went through all of the MVP info and could find
only information on how to become one, profiles of current MVPs (damned
attractive, all of you), and all sorts of other stuff related to the
program... Everything but how to find the web site.

You guys must think it¹s obvious. It isn¹t to me.

If you¹re gonna ask us to use it, shouldn¹t the url be provided somewhere in
the support sections? Near newsgroups? In the MVP area?

Just wondering...

Best,

- Bill

Hi Bill!

The MVP website <http://www.mvps.org> and the Entourage FAQ section
<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/> is privately maintained by MVPs and not
by Microsoft. Confused yet?

Microsoft sponsors the MVP program, which recognizes folks in the
Microsoft newsgroup communities and other communities, and awards them
an MVP designation. We're award recipients and not employees of
Microsoft.

While you'll hear many of defend Microsoft against unfair accusations
you'll also hear us add to the complaint list as well. MVPs prefer to
keep their independence and have therefore created their own site apart
from Microsoft.

Hope this and the links above help! bill

Bill -

Thanks. I¹m not surprised to hear that, and of course I get it.

Suggestion though for all of you?

Why not put that web address in the signature of all the MVPs?

Without that, new people will have no way of knowing that the site exists,
much less how to get there.

And I think it becomes important because some MVPs seem to expect everyone
to know about it.

Absolute truth? I probably could have been less stubborn and tried mvps.org
in the browser, based on some of the email addresses you guys use. But lose
a chance to make a point? Never! :)

Thanks again.

Best,

- Bill

Just wondering...
The people who ask you to use the FAQ website are the MVPs, the same people
who provide the FAQ site.

The people who provide "MS Support Pages" are Microsoft. Nobody from
Microsoft has told you to use the FAQ page.

The MVPs have no control over the content of the MacTopia or any other MS
support site. So don't blame us.

The MacTopia site does refer to the MVPs in the Newsgroups page of the
Community section
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/community/community.aspx?pid=newsgroups> .
Naturally Microsoft refers to its own newsgroups. There's no reason for them
to be required to refer to an independent website over which they have no
control, although maybe it would be nice if they did. There is an "Entourage
Weblog" on Microsoft's MSDN blog server <http://blogs.msdn.com/entourage/>
which does refer to the MVP FAQ website but there's no way you'd know about
that blog page from MacTopia either. (I think the Entourage blog belongs to
one of the Entourage program managers, but I'm not certain.)

As it happens, the so-called "Entourage MVP FAQ website" belongs to just one
of the MVPs, Diane Ross (a topic of some internal dispute some time back)
although other MVPs have provided most of the content. It's hosted on an
independent server provided by a (non-Mac) MVP over which Microsoft has no
control. Perhaps Microsoft can't be seen legally to be recommending an
independent when site, in case we recommend something that goes wrong for
someone. Or perhaps they just haven't got around to it. I believe that quite
recently one of the Microsoft support pages somewhere did provide a link to
the Word MVP site, but I'm not certain. (The Word MVP site is collectively
owned by all the Word MVPs.)

Microsoft does support the MVPs pretty strongly. If you use MacTopia's
Community links to get to the newsgroups here, you'll see links to the FAQ
site within minutes from the signatures of most of the MVPs' signatures,
like mine below. It's hardly a secret.

Oh. :)

Thanks.

Never noticed the links in your signature before.
