Live Sync vs. Schedules for IMAP

Can anyone tell me exactly what the various options in the account settings dialog mean? I'm having a really hard time keeping my IMAP account and subfolders constantly and properly synced. My server supports Live Sync and that doesn't seem to make much of a difference. I'm using Dreamhost for my e-mail. I've also tried playing with schedules and making sure all messages are synced. But I keep visiting subfolders and it says they're empty. I can't search for e-mail either. Really frustrated. Also why do IMAP subfolders disappear from the favorites bar between launches?

First you need to confirm that. Control-click the server name in your folder
list and choose "Get Info." If your server supports live sync, you'll see
"IDLE" among the listed capabilities.
