Local Inbox Location

Mark Morowczynski

Hi,

Currently I was going to begin archiving my email in entourage 2004 from the
exchange server 2003 to the Inbox folder under Folders on My Computer.
However, I can't seem to find where these files are stored at. My concern is
if I get a new Mac soon, how would I transport these files that only exist
in the Local Inbox folder? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,

Entourage stores all your information in its database, which can be found in
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2004 Identities/<your identity>.
That's the file you'll need to transfer to your new computer (and creating
regular backups of that file won't do you any harm, either). There are other
files in that folder as well, Signatures, Rules and Mailing Lists, which you
might want to transfer, too. So the best solution would be to simply copy
your Microsoft User Data folder into your Documents folder on your new Mac.

Warning: make sure that no Office program, nor the database daemon, are
running while you do that. Another warning: your new Mac comes with an
Office 2004 Test Drive. Since you already own Office, make sure you delete
that Test Drive *before* attempting to install the full version; it's been
known to disrupt Office seriously if left on the hard disk. To delete it,
use the uninstaller provided by Microsoft, an application called Remove
Office, which you should find inside the Test Drive folder. Don't just trash
it; use the uninstaller.

If you have any questions, just post back. Also, you might find the
Entourage Help Page incredibly useful:

Test Account

Michel,

I'm not actually too sue how to make sure the database daemon is running. I
have fully quit entourage before moving it. Is this the same thing or do I
actually have to stop some sort of service?

Hi Mark,

to make sure the database daemon is not running, launch Activity Monitor,
which you can find in Applications/Utilities. You will see a window with all
the processes currently running in your user account, and Database Daemon
should be one of them (the icon looks almost like Entourage's). Click on it,
then on "Quit Process" in the upper left side of the toolbar. That should do
it. The database daemon is running even if no Office application is active,
it manages for instance Office notifications, which can pop up even when
Entourage is not running.

In your case, quitting the database daemon might not even be necessary; it
will only run once an Office application has been launched, and if you
delete the Test Drive on your new Mac straight ahead (remember: use the
Remove Office tool!), it should not be running anyway.
