For anyone needing an Office 2000 CD Key for their Office 2000 CD,
there is only one place where the CD Key (aka Product Key) is located
on your computer. If you don't have Office 2000 currently installed,
and only have the CD, this information will not help. But if you DO
have access to an installation of Office from the CD in question, then
this will allow you to retrieve the CD Key in order to install it on a
different computer. I am talking about the 25-character Product Key
(CD Key) located on the Certificate of Authenticity which is asked for
when you install the program.
When you install Office 2000 the msi installer creates setup files in
the form of text files located in a Temp folder. Do a search for
Office 2000*.txt and if you haven't deleted your temp files the file
may still be there. If you find it, there will be more than one. And
you want to open one of them which is 50K to 100K in size. The smaller
ones don't have it. If you find one, open it in Notepad and search for
PIDKEY. If it's there it will look like this:
Property(C): AcceptEULA = -1
Property(C): NewFolder = NewFolder-NOTUSED
Property(C): PIDKEY = M5JGCEP94RTMCJWQMT47774W9
Property(C): ErrorDialog = ErrorDialog
Property(C): USERNAME = John Doe
Property(C): ReInstallRepair = -1
Property(C): _BrowseProperty = INSTALLLOCATION
Property(C): ProductID = 02605-OEM-0050063-25639
The PIDKEY is the CD Key you need. I modified it slightly here to
avoid any potential DMCA problems for the Group.
For those of you interested in really pursuing this, you could use an
undelete program to undelete all .txt files and hopefully recover the
Office2000* txt files. You'd be surprised at just how much stuff is
lurking in deleted files!
Good Luck!
