Locking a word document

I want to prevent anyone from making changes to a word document before I
email it. Is there a way to lock the document or save it as an image file or
something?

Save it as a locked PDF. It doesn't absolutely prevent changes, but it does
discourage them. There's no way to do it in Word itself that isn't easily
defeated.
