logon failure if Exchange alias/username same in forest

Hi,

Entourage 2004 (11.1.0) on Mac OS X 10.3.9 is giving me:

"logon failure: unknown user name or bad password"

We're speculating this occurs whenever there is another user with the
same F+LAST alias in the GAL -OR- same username in AD in a different
domain (changing the alias didn't seem to help). We are a child domain.

e.g. at Entourage prompt, we type:

account: OURDOMAIN\jsmith
password: ********

and get the bad password message. OWA and Outlook 2003/PC work fine.
Password is fine. Keychain is fine.

In our Exchange org, we have:

Smith, Janet (SMTP: [email protected])
Smith, Jed (SMTP: [email protected]) <- changed from default UPN
of @sub.parent.com; oursubdomain.com exists in our DNS)

Note that the email address entered in the account/password dialog is
the FQDN on the Exchange Email Addresses tab, which is unique to the
entire organization/forest/site. We think it's doing it because there
is another "jsmith" elsewhere in the forest, but shouldn't Entourage
recognize this is in a different domain?

Surely someone else in a large environment must have run into this?
