Long standing problem reading and writing to network

Bernice Roust

Hi,

My client has big problems, He uses Publisher extensivly but find file
will corupt when saving to a network drive, thid results in the loss of
changes madew and will often render the file unopenable.

I have thorougy checked and tested the network configuration which
can quite happily handle 18 GB backup files and large audio files and
this phenominon is apparently exclusive behavior to Publisher.

I am compleatly at a loss and my client is desperate.

OS windows 2000
filesystem NTFS
Protocols TCP/IP - microsoft file and print
Media 100 base T

Any suggestions please.

Save to the local hard drive, copy to the network medium.
Copy across to the local hard drive before opening.
This is the only (reliable) way to guarantee that this will never happen to
you.

True, but this is not a viable solution to my clent, who
has many hundreds of files on a server and need to be
modified and printed from differing workstations and printers.

The confution created by multiple copies is too great.

Well that is the only solution and Publisher is not and never has been
network friendly.

Unfortunately Ed,

This is not a viable solution on my client's case, He has
hundreds (possibly thousands) of publisher file on a server
that need editing and printing from different workstations
and the duplication of these files would cause far too much
confusion.

The damage to files and time wastage caused by this problem
is very serious.

Dear Bernice the only thing you can try, is to open the root of the server
to all users.
If you are not prepared to do that, then you have no solution.
Opening the root is not a guaranteed fix, but is a high probability work
around.
