Looking for a way to show data flow

Think I need to make an animated line into an object so that I can show flow between 2 points. Like to make it an object so I can make it longer/shorter/fatter/thinner etc.

Something like the following

OOOOOOOXOOOXXOOOOXXXOOOXOOO
-----------------------------------------------

Like to be able to make the x's different colors and/or shapes,
and be able to make the o's into blank spaces or just show the x's at random or various intervals.
Would like to have 3 different speed types (fast/med/slow)

Any idea of the best way to do this?

What version of PowerPoint are you using? It makes a heap of difference.
