Looking for Pub 98

I

ilyaz

I have a Pub 97 and Pub 2003 installed on my computer. A number of
publications I try to open would not open in Pub 97 saying that program
could not open a publication from another version. The same publication
could be open in the Pub 2003. So, I presume, those publications were saved
in Pub 98, which I had installed long ago, but it is gone for a long while
now...
Is there a way to get a Pub 98 now?

How does Pub 2003 compare with Publisher 97.... haven't received an
answer whether I should invest the $$ for the newer version..

I suspect you probably could buy Publisher 98 through eBay. It came with Office
97 in some packages. And Office 97 Small Business.
Publisher 2003 will open all 98 publications. If you are having trouble it could
be Norton.

Mary,
I've removed Norton long ago for this reason! So, what problem I have for
now, are some Publisher files saved in the version somewhere between Pub 97
and Pub 2003. Pub 97 would not open it, but Pub 2003 open all of them... I
do not like Pub 2003 to convert all these files (quite a few and large),
because of different fonts used in the original files and not available in
Pub 2003. Using substitution fonts creates another problem, etc.
As I mentioned it in my original post, I used to have Pub 98, but could not
find it neither on my HD (formatted it several times), nor on disc... Will
look on eBay...
Meanwhile, it just came to my mind: shouldn't Pub 97 be able to open a Pub
98 file? As I remember, there were just minor changes from 97 to 98, like
mail merge and something else...
Also, for now, I have both Pub 97 and Pub 2003 installed on my machine and
working fine. May I have Pub 2000 installed along with them? In the past, I
think, you've answered this question, but I do not remember and could not
find the answer...
As always, it's a pleasure to have your expert assistance.

You can have all the Publisher versions on your computer. Put each in its own
folder. I have a Windows XP computer that has all the versions without any
issues. This computer has Vista which I installed after installing the various
versions of Publisher. All of them work somewhat. The Clip Gallery is
non-functional. I cannot re-install Publisher 98 to correct some problems, it
simply doesn't recognize the Vista OS.

Publisher 2003 will not open 2.0 files because of a certain security update.
Publisher 97 will open them however. Sometimes it is better just to let some old
publications go.

Well, Mary, now I have more questions...
I thought, that the Publisher files I have were saved in Pub 98 or Pub 2000.
But, if Pub 2003 could not open the Pub 2000 files, than my files were saved
in some other format. Which one? Is there some way to find out which
particular version the file was saved with? How Pub 97 KNOWS that the file
is from <another> version?
Thanks for your help.

Publisher 2003 will open 2000. The program changed substantially from 97 to 98,
not for the better by the way. 97 can open 95, 2.0 and 1.0. Pub 98 opens all
those before it but cannot save as a different version. Publisher 2000 can open
all versions before it and can save as a 98 file.

I don't know why you cannot open 2000 files. I have run into a few 2000 files
that can't be opened in Publisher 2000 but can be opened in 2002, 2003 and 2007.
I think it has to do with updates and add-ins and weird software like Norton.

Yes, Publisher does accept all installed fonts, but if you have an old
publication that was composed on a different computer with different installed
fonts you will get the font query.

Mary,
may I repeat my last question from a previous message? Is there a way to
find out in what Pub version a particular file was saved?

Right-click the file, properties, when was it modified? This is usually a good
way to pinpoint what version Publisher was used to create the publication.

Mary,
thanks for the advice. I checked the properties of several files. Here's the
strange thing: files were created in 2005, but modified in 2003... As a
matter of fact, I think, these files were created in 2002 or before.
How it could be that the creation date is "after" modification? What's
wrong?

I have dates like that, most of my Publisher files say they were created January
26, 2006. This is when I transferred all my files from an old computer to this
computer. The modified date didn't change.
