Lookup function using ranges

Hi.
Does anyone know if there is a way to us lookup
function - or something else - to find if a number
provided exists with a given number range?
ie - have number 9876543
have number ranges 9871000 - 9872000, 9872500 - 9874000,
9876000 - 9876600.
I've got many thousands of numbers so Im not in a
position to expand and look for the given number.
Using the example above a need to return a result that
indicates it is within one of the ranges and for a number
like 9876701 that it is not.
Thanks!

Assume:

1. your numbers are all in Column A;
2. the number you want to lookup is in Cell B1.

Check if this formula will be of help to you

=countif(A:A,$B$1)>0

thanks - tried that one but all the numbers within the
range need to be in the colum. I've got hundred of
ranges with many thousands of numbers so I need to be
able to look somehow on the range - perhaps I can do
somethign with a start and end of the number range?

If the number range is presented as "9871000 - 9872000"
(as you have mentioned in your original posting) in single
cells, save the XL file as text. Then open it in XL using
the '-' character as delimiter so that you will get the
upper and lower numbers in the range in different columns.
Then you can use normal boolean functions to do it.
