Lost contacts on syns with phone

I have updated my contacts, and when I synced with my Nokia phone, I
lost a lolt of contacts because I used the wrong settings. Is there
anyway I can recover an old outlook file which will have my contacts
in.

Only if you created the "old outlook file" prior to the faulty sync.

Is this a default setting, or do I actually have to save "the old
outlook file". I do not understand what you mean by this.

What I mean is there is no automatic backup feature in Outlook. Unless you
deliberately made a backup of your data, either manually or with a backup
add-in you installed, there is no backup.
