lost email folders

While I was "cleaning up" my Entourage email inbox, deleted items, etc. all of the subfolders I had created under my inbox suddenly disappeared! I had a lot over very important stuff in those subfolders! I have searched and searched all over my MacBook Pro hard drive for anything that looks like a data file I could "restore" my subfiles and emails with to no avail.
So first, WHY did this happen?
And second, how do I retrieve those all important email subfolders?

That could be a sign of database corruption.
You should launch Entourage pressing the alt key down to rebuild your
identity,
