Mac ical and exchange 2003

I have a Mac user who doesn't want to use Entourage, so he has opted
for the mac mail client and ical. His account is setup as an exchange
account. The OS is 10.4, latest release. The exchange is 2003.

The issue I am having is that none of the other users who are all on
PC, who all have exchange accounts, are able to invite him into a
meeting. When they send an invite to his account, it disappears into
thin air. This problem only happens when sending an invite from an
exchange specific account within the network. I have tested from a pop
account and it works.

Has anyone had this problem before? Is it maybe not possible to plug
into exchange correctly with ical? Would it only work if I convert the
Mac users account to a pop account?

I desperately need confirmation on this!!

Why are you asking an Entourage newsgroup? Shouldn't you be asking an Apple
bulletin board for help with iCal?

Here's the next question:

WHY exactly does he like using iCal when it doesn't handle invitations from
Outlook properly?

If he wants to go to the extra trouble, I'd _guess_ (don't know for sure)
that he could do the same thing that people do in Entourage when invitations
come from Outlook users not on their own Exchange server (or if they don't
have one):

The invitations would appear as an .ics attachment. (Probably they appear
already with an iCal icon. If not, drag one to the desktop, do a Get Info,
set to Opens With iCal, click Change All.) It may or may not work simply to
double-click the attachment - if not, drag it to the desktop to make an .ics
file, and drag that into iCal. This will work in iCal 2 in Tiger, not in
Panther.

This would enter the event in iCal, but NOT give any options (as far as I
know) in Mail.app (or Entourage) where the email was received, to Accept,
Decline, etc. That's just how it is.

Outlook on PCs (where the invitations are coming from) has non-standard .ics
invitation formats. Entourage 2004 has been specifically designed to
accommodate these. iCal and Mail have not. Only on Entourage 2004 (not X)
will invitations from Outlook on the same Exchange Server be perceived as
real invitations which can be accepted , declined, attendees recorded,
comments sent, invitations cancelled and modified, etc. So if your Mac user
wants or needs that functionality, he should stick with Entourage, not iCal
and Mail.
