Mail deleted after being opened

After I open an email from the inbox it's just gone as soon as I click on
another folder. Doesn't go into the Deleted Items folder either. Just
vanishes entirely.
This happened when I had the preference set to mark as read in the preview
panel, but when I unchecked that opened it still continues to happen.

This 'vanishing act' also happens just by marking the message as read
without actually opening it.
I have no rules set. I have nothing in the mailing list manager, either.

No, neither are checked.

Further investigation shows that any item in any folder, including the
Deleted Items folder, will vanish if opened or marked as read.

Do a custom search for a "vanished" email. This might tell you where they
are going. Mail doesn't just vanish. Some rule or script has to be moving
the mail.

If I create a custom Mail View with a specific email address, all those
"vanished" emails appear there. If I try to drag one of them into a Saved
folder, it will not move/copy.

Thanks for your reply, Diane. This kind of search produced no results.

Yes; it seemed something had to be moving the mails somewhere which is why I
checked rules and list management. I've looked in all possible entourage
folders and and do not see these emails anywhere.

More info. Please see: http://bigopera.com/deletes.jpg

There is a specific folder for a .mac email account with sub-folders. This
tree is not affected by the delete problem. Should each of my other email
accounts be listed in this way also?

Very new to the Mac/Entourage world...only having acquired a Macbook Pro a
few weeks ago after 20 years in the DOS/Windows world.

Custom views are just aliases of your messages. This is why you can't move
them. If you look at the columns in the custom view it will show you the
folder where the message are located. If the message is in the folder you
expect it to be but not showing then it's a View preference. I know you said
you checked for View Unread and View Flagged only, but did you do that for
each folder that is having a problem? The preference for view is not global.

The .Mac account is an IMAP account.

The account where the mail is moved is a POP account. There is a POP rule
that is moving your messages or individual folders have View Unread only
selected. If I understand you correctly, you see the mail in the correct
folder, but after you read it the mail disappears. This sounds like View
Unread or View Flagged only is selected.

Background on Rules:

There are three types of rules used in Entourage to manage your mail. The
Mailing List Manager (MLM) and Junk Mail Filter (JMF) are names for
specialized rules. Rules are custom rules that you create

The order of execution on Rules:

Mailing List Manager
Junk Mail Filter
Rules

1) POP Rules act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in the Inbox (On My
Computer), NOT when it arrives in any other folder. Once it's moved to
another folder it won't be seen by rules.

2) IMAP Rules are meant to act on a message ONLY when it first arrives in
the IMAP INBOX, not when moved to another IMAP folder.

It's very easy to set up a MLM rule by accident, when you are marking a
message as 'not junk'. The wording of that dialog is ambiguous to say the
least. Check if there is an MLM entry (look for MLM entries under the tools
menu) .Check the popup for the target folder. You can select to use the
Mailing List Manager (MLM) rule or your custom rule. Mailing List Manager
rules run before your other rules.

Thanks so much!! This was the key to the problem. Too long in the Windows
Outlook world. In the process of teaching the old dog new tricks.

Thank for the extensive information on rules and MLM. Very kind of you.

Getting use to a new application is always touch. I'm completely lost in the
