mail or Entourage ?

anyone

Probably a silly question but here goes - later in the year I'll buy a
new G5 iMac with Tiger and Office 2004, should I as a home user plan on
using mail.app or Entourage for e-mail/RSS/newsgroup use ?

Mail.app doesn't do RSS/newsgroups. On the other hand it comes for free
with Tiger (Entourage doesn't). m.

Since you're going to have Tiger, you should be aware that Safari 2, which
is included, does support RSS. Entourage doesn't either, though I seem to
recall there's some tool available that allows you to see RSS feeds in
Entourage. I doubt it has the customizability of a real RSS reader though.

And there are certainly other news readers you can use as well, some free,
some not.

It's not that it's a silly question, exactly--it's just that the only real
answer is try them both and see which you prefer. Why plan in advance,
especially since it sounds like you intend to buy the Office suite
regardless? (there is a 30-day trial version, though)

Entourage also includes an address book and calendar--apple's options for
those will come free with the computer as Address Book and iCal. A lot of
third-party programs will integrate with apple's apps, while Word integrates
with Entourage. Your preferred solution depends on what you intend to be
doing. Also depends on whether you would rather switch among programs or
among windows in the same program, for different functions. I happen to
prefer to keep my mail and my news together, and that's pretty much the
determinant for me.

There have been other threads on the Mail/Address Book/iCal vs. Entourage
question--you can search for additional comments:

Given the fact that I don't like Microsoft, I still think Eudora is the best
email handler I have ever used. Eudora is not perfect, but it is by far the
easiest and most flexible one. And you are right, Safari 2 support RSS, it
gives me another reason not to use Entourage. Yes, I use Entourage but only
limited to reading newsgroup.

What does that mean? That you realize Entourage is better, but it's against
your religion to use anything made by Microsoft, so too bad? That will be
helpful to people who just want to know which is best.

Why should the fact that Safari supports RSS give you a reason not to use
Entourage? Entourage is an email client and Personal Information Manager
(calendar, contacts, tasks, etc.) and doesn't do RSS. Safari is a web
browser and does.

For the record, Entourage is probably the best email client on any platform,
and is a pretty good PIM (if not quite up to Outlook on Windows), far more
sophisticated than Apple's Address Book and iCal. It depends what you need.
If you already have Office (for Word, Excel, etc.) you should definitely try
out Entourage.

Have I said anything that offended you?

It is just a personal preference. Nothing else.

I said I don't like Microsoft, but I did not badmouth them, did I?
