Mail Views: Why do unsubscribed news messages show up?

Steven Day

Just wondering why news messages from groups I'm not subscribed to show up
under different mail views? I realized it's possible to edit these views but
it would be much easier if I could, say, see all unread email messages
without having to view huge lists of news messages.

Thanks in advance.

This is due to poor handling of news caches in entourage.

Messages from groups that you were once subscribed to will still remain in
the newsgroups cache, even though they aren't directly visible in the folder
listing. These are what show up in the search or mail view listings (earlier
versions of entourage would also continue to download messages for these
groups if you had a schedule to do so active before unsubscribing!)

To get rid of the cached messages, right-click (control-ckick) on the news
server icon in the folder listing and select 'clear cache'. You will have to
re-download any messages in groups you are subscribed to after this.

To get rid of all news messages in your mail view, edit the view and add the
criteria 'news account is not <name of your news account.'. Add one of these
criteria line for each news account you have and make sure the 'match' pop
up is set to 'If all criteria are met'
(I also have criteria to exclude the junk mail folder(s), deleted mail
folder(s), outbox and some archive folders).

Thanks Barry. Actually, I was never subscribed to a couple of the groups;
just browsing, in fact. But they still showed up, which surprised me. It
also messes up viewing since so many news messages are posted "today" or
remain "unread." For now, I just emptied the cache. I had also edited the
views before posting. It seems like a hassle to include many different
folders and subfolders manually. Yet, selecting "all folders," the ideal
setting for certain views, meant I was getting all those news postings--even
from groups I had never subscribed to. In any case, thanks again and I'll
play with it some more.

Best,

Steven

You can still select 'all folders' then exclude specific ones with a 'not in
folder xyz' etc.

It is easier than removing the 'all folders' and asking for each specific
folder to be included.

Thanks Barry. I thought of that, too. But if all the newsgroups looked at
show up under a given view, I'm not sure if I can remember to exclude all of
them either. I also noticed that under certain views, such as "unread," that
even reads clearly viewed (not in bold any longer) nevertheless show up. It
seems that the mail views options are thus somewhat idiosyncratic.

You don't need to exclude specific newsgroups - you can exclude an entire
news account.
