How can I get this user group to group replies under the original post? Now
all the Re: whatever is all separated and I have to look through them all.

How are you reading the newsgroup?

In entourage? v2001, vX or v2004? Preview pane? Three column view?
On the web? Through the MS portal? Through Google Groups?
In a dedicated newsreader? Which one?

Give us a few more clues and we may be able to helo.

I am reading through Entourage 2004 Preview Pane OSX
Sorry I should have stated that.

I have a custom arrangement set up for that very purpose.
Group items by: Subject
Sort groups by: Sent Newest on Top
Sort items within groups by: Sent Oldest on Top
Default display for groups: Expanded

I suggest you give that a try to start. With the newsgroup open, go to View
Arrange By > Edit Custom Arrangements. Click the "New" button, and create
the one above. Then, click OK, and close the Custom Arrangements window.
Go to View > Arrange By > <whatever you named the Custom Arrangement>. Now,
the messages will be grouped by subject. The groups with the most recent
entries appear at the top, and the messages within each group are sorted
chronologically with the oldest messages at the top.

That should get you started. You are free to change the Custom Arrangement
to work best for your needs. Just go to View > Arrange By > Edit Custom
Arrangements, and double-click the arrangement. You can experiment with
different settings to achieve the view you want.

Unfortunately, because Entourage does not thread by reference, any messages
with slightly modified subjects or non-standard prefixes (like Re : or AW:)
will not be grouped properly. Also, threads can't be viewed in the format

If you would like to see those more advanced threading features requiring
threading by reference, be sure to express your feedback here.
Alternatively, you can send it via the web form:

Put me down for better newsgroup message-threading. I had planned to use
Entourage to run an online course for the University of Phoenix, where
discussions and group response depend entirely on the threaded nature
Outlook's group display. The Mac is supported as a client, but the school
can't do anything about Entourage's lack of capability.

This is the first major shortcoming I've encountered compared with Outlook
-- I switched from PC to Mac, and now I may live to regret it.

Not that it is an elegant solution, but you could run Virtual PC, and use
Outlook from there.

Outlook does not support news. You'd have to use Outlook Express for
Windows. An easier solution would be to run one of the several other
newsreader apps for the Mac.

Oh well, I tried. That's why this NG is so great!

Thanks guys. I do have VirtualPC, but what a pig of an app -- I always feel
like I'm running underwater, and this is on a 1.5 GHz Powerbook. So Outlook
Express it is. (The problem with news*readers* is just that; they're not
very good at interactivity.)
