managing identities

Hi there,

I cant quite figure out how to get entourage to handle "identities" Say I have an email account that I can receive mail for 5 different email addresses. When I hit reply I want to automatically have my "From" email address be equivalent to the address in the "To" field. So if I receive mail addressed to "[email protected]" then when I click reply "[email protected]" is in the "From" field. When I receive email to "[email protected]" then when I reply to that particular message "[email protected]" is the From email in the message I am creating.

When I compose a message I want to have a default email address that is chosen for the "from" email address but it could be changed to any of the five emails addresses. How can I configure entourage to do this?

Please help.

Cheers,

Noah

Hi Noah,

be careful when you use the expression "Identities", as this refers to
functionality included in Entourage that has an entirely different
purpose from what you are trying to achieve.

You don't make it clear which kind of account or account setup you are
using. I'm guessing that you have got one POP account with five
different aliases (main address: [email protected], alias address:
blah1/2/3/[email protected], and any message sent to blah1/2/3/[email protected]
reverts to [email protected] when you try to reply).* In order to be able to
send mail from these different accounts, you will need to set up
"send-only" accounts in Tools>Accounts. In other words, go to
Tools>Accounts and make sure your main account is up and running. Now
create a new POP account, leave the incoming server details blank, and
for the outgoing server details, fill in any of your alias addresses
([email protected]). In the Options section, make sure to enable the option
which asks you to enter a user name and a password, and enter the user
name of your *main address* ([email protected]). Repeat this procedure as
many times as necessary.

You can now send messages through these alias accounts, but note that
since your alias only redirects to your main account, you cannot
configure Entourage to reply via the alias e-mail address which the
original message was sent to.

* Now _that_ is one very strange sentence.

I'm unclear if these are alias email addresses or 5 separate email accounts.
For example I have a Comcast account and I have multiple Comcast accounts.
Other accounts like dot Mac let's you create an alias account.

In Entourage preferences, uncheck Reply --> Using default account.

If this is an alias account like the dot Mac alias addresses, you have to
manually change the address.

You can send messages through these alias accounts, but note that since your
alias only redirects to your main account, you cannot configure Entourage to
reply via the alias e-mail address which the original message was sent to.
