Mass Removal of Outlook Categories

How do I:

1. remove all categories from a large group of items? Grouping by
category and dragging them to Categories:None doesn't work...

2. change categories for a large group of items? Grouping by category
and dragging them to another category ADDS the new category, instead
of replacing the category. Probably makes sense in most instances, but
not for my current issue.

In both cases, right-click the items, choose Categories, and clear or select the check boxes for the appropriate categories.
