Maximum database size

J

John B.

What is the maximum database size for Entourage 10.1.1 under Mac OS 10.2.8?
I thought I heard it was 1.5 GB.

Unknowingly mine got up to 1.75 GB, and I had some problems. Fortunately an
"advanced" rebuild has restored it to working condition. The rebuild reduced
the database size to 1.15 GB.

Are the following files now disposable?

Database (Rebuild) -- from a failed Typical rebuild?
Database (Rebuild) Cache -- from a failed Typical rebuild?

Old Database
Old Database Cache

It seems I encounter corruption when I save an message with
attachments. (The first sign is that the saved file won't send. It gets
stuck in the Outbox.)

Corruption also seems to occur if I drag attachments from one email message
to another.

Are these known problems?

Thanks!

John

P.S. Is there a limit on the database size in the current version of
Entourage?

It's 4Gb, and you get progressively more severe warnings as you approach
that limit.

Entourage vX 10.0 was 2Gb, without any warnings, but is you have updated to
10.1 you are OK up to 4Gb.

That would indicate that the problems were due to database corruption, which
the rebuild is intended to resolve :)

Yes.

No. You should be able to do both those operation just fine.

What sort of account, what sort of attachments etc?
Thanks!

P.S. Is there a limit on the database size in the current version of
Entourage?

In Office 2004 things changed and there is now no fixed size limit, rather
there is a limit to the number of items that can be contained - around 2
million, IIRC.

i have an intrest in this... one of out directors has 5500 messages in
one folder.. and the database is getting rather large 1.2 gig (mainly
in the one folder)... we have Office 2004 but am worried that this
amount of mail messages are causing the problems we are having - is
there a limit on the amount of messages in one folder?

No limit, but very large mail folders can become slow and unresponsive -
especially if using the new 'message groups' in 2004.

I have some archive folders containing around 100,000 messages, but I rarely
open the mail folder directly. Nothing breaks, but sorting those folders
would take several seconds.

I have a similar problem with Entourage X on OS 10.4.1

Advanced Rebuild Fails. My database is 4.6GB large. I tried upgradin
to Office 2004, but none of my emails were copied over. Does anyon
have any advice as to how I can get my database imported successfull
into Entourage 2004?

Thanks

I don't know how you managed to exceed 4GB in Entourage X. Which version?
Update it to 10.1.6 if you're no there. Go through you messages and delete
hundreds or thousands o messages containing attachments, or just the
attachments. Empty the Deleted Items folder.

Then try a Typical Rebuild, just to bring the size down. If now under 4 GB,
try importing into 2004 again. If no good, go back to X again and try an
Advanced Rebuild, which might just work now that you're under 4 GB.

Probably none of this will work. You must have got warnings as you were
approaching GB, which you must have ignored.

Paul:

It's very easy to exceed 4 GB in Entourage. All you need to do is to send
and receive a fair amount of email over a couple of years. Despite
archiving frequently, I have hit that limit a number of times. The problem
is that Entourage is very poorly designed to sync all of the email folders
all of the time. So where in Outlook you can specify on a folder by folder
basis what you want synced, you have to sync all folders of Entourage
whether or not you want them available offline. The way I have dealt with
this is the workaround of specifying that only 25K of a message is received
unless I ask for more and then resyncing all of my folders. This of course
means that I have to go through the trouble of manually downloading the
entire message for the messages I want to have available offline. Even
doing it this way, I have a 2 GB database. The other problem with this
defect in Entourage is that Entourage is always syncing and re-syncing and
re-syncing all of the time, resulting in a delay in seeing new messages come
in. Why Microsoft could not have done better with the Exchange syncing is
beyond me. Why aren't Tasks and Notes synced? Why was Outlook 2001 so much
better at interoperating with Exchange Server? Why does Mac BU announce
vaporware at Macworld in January (why announce something that will not be
available for at least 6 months?)? I almost believe that that the problems
with Entourage are more than incompetence.

This is actually my father's entourage problem. He claims he neve
received error messages saying he's near full capacity. At this poin
in Entouarge X, which is updated to the most current, the identity wil
not even load. A message appears asking to rebuild, but even th
advanced rebuild fails. I'm at a loss. I've tried the upgrade, but n
emails imported, only the folders. Any further suggestions would b
appreciated.
