Maximum number of messages in database

What is the maximum number of messages that can be in the Entourage database
before problems start to occur?

I have over 3,500 messages in my database although there are no more than
250 in each folder. I have 3 IMAP accounts (all with plenty of space left)
and 1 POP account.

Although Entourage is still running reasonably fast, rules are failing to
run and sometimes even though I've read all messages (and done 'mark all as
read') I still see "INBOX (1)" (reminds me of a problem in early Mozilla
versions...). I have verified, compacted, and rebuilt the database
multiple times.

I have Entourage 2004 SR1 and Mac OS X 10.3.7.

It's got nothing to do with the limit for messages. The limit in Entourage
2004 is 1 MILLION messages (less a few thousand depending how may other
items you have. The exact limit is 2 million items but each message counts
as 2 items.)

I have a few problems like that with my non-UIDPLUS IMAP account (mac.com) -
basically just that the "Unread count" stays at 1 too high for about 5
minutes. No such problem with my UIDPLUS (Cyrus server) IMAP account. No
problem with IMAP rules (but I don't have too many of those).

I think you probably have less-than-perfect IMAP servers which ignore some
internet protocols.

I didn't have problems until I imported a bunch of messages from Mail and
Mozilla. My startup schedules aren't running either. I am considering
removing my preferences and just moving the database over to a clean
Entourage profile. Think that would help?

No. "Moving the database" will move the corruption. It's the database that's
corrupt, not the installation (almost certainly not the preferences).
Rebuild the database. Hold down Option key when launching Entourage and
choose Rebuild.

I have verified, rebuilt, and compacted the database multiple times -- no
change. Startup schedules are working again (turns out the rebuild turned
them off) but rules still won't run.
