Do I need to buy another Office XP standard for students and teachers for my
son's new computer since I have the discs for the 2002 version I purchased.
The store owner said I could legally use the software for up to three
computers.

Read the EULA.

If you read the EULA you will find that you are limited to one installation.
You will need to uninstall from your computer prior to installing on your
son's computer.

The store owner is confusing Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers
with Office 2003 for Students and Teachers. The EULA for latter allows
installation on up to three computer in the same family for non-commercial
use.

To further clarify;

Microsoft Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers will allow
installation on one Desktop AND one laptop computer simultaneously.
