you have to have the database opened in exclusive mode to make a MDe in 2000
and above.

Hi, Chas.

You can create an MDE after opening the database in "shared mode," but no
other user or process can be using the database while you are creating the
MDE, so you don't actually *have to be* in "exclusive mode" to create the
MDE.
