message size limit?

I

Ignat Solzhenitsyn

I am finding (this was also the case under X, I think) that sending mail
with even medium-size attachments (OK, it¹s all relative: to be specific, I
am finding this with attachments over 1MB or so) results in error messages,
typically:

Error:
An unknown error (4363) occurred.

Explanation:
Mail could not be sent.

I suspect this can only have to do with the total size of the outgoing
message (since no problems sending mail from those same POP accounts
otherwise). If no, what in the world else could it be? If yes, what
remedies are available? Surely many users on this forum have need to send
messages far bigger than 1MB and do it every day. What can you advise?
(P.S. Always hate to bring Windows into the discussion, but I believe that
OE6, and even older OE versions for Windows, contains a nifty
setting/feature called something like ³break apart message larger than...².)

I could not find any information on this on the Entourage mvps help page, so
thought I¹d go ahead and post this. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

There's no limit for Entourage. Your ISP may have a limit - officially - or
unofficially it just may have trouble handling large messages or
attachments. Yes, people here send attachments larger than 1 MB every day.
Of interest, I have had trouble sending very large attachments using mac.com
in the past, although my mac.com account is IMAP which might make a
difference (having to upload the message to the server's Sent Items folder
as well as to the SMTP server), You could even be exceeding the mailbox
quota (15 MB, I think, for all folders combined) if you try. If you use POP
and don't leave messages on the server, that shouldn't be the problem, but
uploading to mac.com's SMTP server will be. The error you quote above is a
server error, passed along, not an Entourage error.

Thanks, Paul. I am still left wondering what solutions others might have to
circumvent such restrictions on the part of their ISPs. Again, is there not
a ³break apart messages larger than...² feature (or something analogous) in
Entourage, a feature extant in OE6 for Windows presumably for this specific
purpose?
