Messages arrive "read" in my inbox

I recently upgraded to Office 2008, and now Entourage is showing all new messages that come into my account as "read" when they arrive. I have played with the relevant settings in preferences to no avail.

Another byproduct of the upgrade was that Entourage would crash because of a daemon failure, but I fixed that with a database rebuild.

Check your Rules and Mailing List Manager (both in the Tools menu) to see if
you have something that is marking messages as read.

I have no rules or mailing list entries....but, your suggestion gave me the idea to create a rule that marks all new email as unread. A bandaid, but it works. Thanks.

This is not normal behavior.

Create a new identity and see if the same thing happens there. You may have
some mild corruption that will be fixed by starting fresh.

Can you verify that the messages are indeed "read" by looking at the
"Online Status" column with the little envelope? Or are they just not
bold? That's actually a preference. Do you see an unread count next to
the folder name?

So, as it turns out, the problem was on the server side. It happened coincidentally with my upgrade to Office 2008.

Related to this - Why did the Read/Unread status get lumped in with the online status? I REALLY like being able to use the online status column in Entourage 2004 to quickly tell if messages are still online. It was the network icon or blank. Now there are very similar icons for online and fully downloaded, so I will have to look much closer to find any messages that are still online. Is there a way to remove the Read/Unread status so only the online status is reflected? If not, can I at least create a saved search to find them all? It doesn't appear that Online Status is a useable field in the searches.
