Messages with an "envalope and page" icon not clearing outbox

If i create a mail and send it it will appear in the
outbox with an icon showing and envalope and a page.
Thease will not clear my outbox (this can be both with or
without attachments)

if i then cut the contents to a new mail and send the
second version appears in the outbox this time with just
a single envalope icon, and often the subject title on
these is displayed in an italics font.

When i then send these are the only mails to clear the
outbox.

Can anybody tell me whats happening here ?
