I thought it was interesting that the same day Microsoft releases nice
update for Entourage, a new MUCH improved version of Microsoft¹s Desktop
Search for Windows was also released. It borrows from Spotlight, but is
still slower (it has to build the index each time) and not integrated.
(Windows Desktop Search is Microsoft¹s attempt to clone Spotlight and
leapfrog Google Desktop ‹ both have been able to index Outlook PST files for
some time.)
I wonder if this signals a closer release schedule for the release dates for
Office on both platforms? From all that I¹ve seen, Microsoft is going to
have its hands full trying with the various flavors of Vista it has planned;
maybe it makes more sense to get Office 12 (Windows) out the door first,
then Vista and Office 12 (Mac)? Office has always been a good cash cow
(especially on the Mac); more people are likely to upgrade Office than move
to Vista right away. PC Magazine called Office 12 the most ³Mac-like²
version, and several of the announced features borrow from the current Mac
version.
We can always hope...
