Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current user - WinXP

If I am not mistaken this problem started after I was installing the Office
XP SP3.
The first time I installed it I did not have the CD of Office XP with me so
had to cancel the installation after it came to the point where it asked for
the CD location.
Then I uninstalled Office XP, got the CD and installed it again.
then I tried to run Office suite but it came up with this message again that
Word/Excel/Powerpoint is not installed for the current user
Then I got the following link -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;322206#toc

following the instructions in which I thought I will be able to solve the
problem. but the problem persists.
I also noticed that after I deleted the registry entries and installed it
again, Word runs but in the Splash screen it shows 'Unknown User'
Unregistered Version' and then pops up this message
this would mean that the Registry entry is not being written properly.
Has anyone else played around with this kind of a problem before?
