Missing Links

Running Entourage 2004 on Mac Mini w/Intel processor.

This morning, my boss tells me that all the links he had created are
missing. The e-mails are intact, but all the links to his Contacts are
gone!

Question 1: What happened? How do I explain this to him?

Question 2: The last back up he did was on Oct. 25. Can those links
be restored from the back up without erasing his current e-mails?

Thank you for your time and help.

Check his preferences.

Turn automatic linking to contacts on or off
1. On the Entourage menu, click Preferences.
2. Under General Preferences, click Address Book.
3. Under Messages, select the options you want.

No!

Thank you for your response. He has always had automatic linking on,
and it is still on.

Can you tell me what happened to cause the links to disappear? Is
there any possibility of restoring the links that were lost? He has
links to e-mails going back three years. Is there any solution to this
problem?

Two possibilities are:

Database is corrupted. Make a duplicate before rebuild. The rebuild function
makes a duplicate but if the rebuild crashes, the duplicate can be damaged.

Preference for linking is corrupted. Try renaming the preferences and let
new ones be created.

~/Library/Preferences/com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Entourage Preferences

Another way to test preferences: You could move the Identity to a new User
that has all clean preferences and test there.

Note: User is created in System Preferences. An Identity is created in
Entourage.

Database corruption can show in strange ways. If these options don't help,
other than going back to a previous backup that worked. I don't think there
is any way to get links back.

Another thing that can be tried, is dumping the cache that OS keeps of
settings and prefs. Take everything in ~/Library/Caches, throw it out (no
need to save them...they're just cache files) and reboot.

Did he do a rebuild? This would erase all links.

It may be possible to restore links between mail items and address book
contacts by script, but this would not restore any links he had created
manually.
