Mixing numerical and alphabetical outline numbering

P

Paul Moloney

A client has required the following outline numbering
scheme to be added to documents:

1 Heading 1
1.1 Heading 2
1.1.1 Heading 3
(etc)

a AppendixHeading1
a.1 AppendixHeading2
a.1.1 AppendixHeading3
(etc)

So far I've been unsuccessful;
I've attempted to set up all the
styles above but with none based
on another style (that is, the
"Style based on" value is "none").
Yet when I make changes to a style,
seemingly random changes are made
to other unlinked heading styles; for
example, if I change AppendixHeading2,
then the numbering for one of the
Heading(n) schemes suddenly becomes
alphabetical. Or the left indent for
heading styles goes negative.

Can anyone tell if what i'm attempting
is even possible with Word?

Thanks,

P.

I had the same problem. I worked around by creating
separate headings and Annex. I the TOC I was able to link
the Annex to normal headings so they appear in the TOC.

In many cases when I restarted numbering, there was a jump
in the numbering. Applying an undo, got it to number as I
was expecting.

I have talked with many people and the general consensus
is that the outline numbering is a horrible creature to
deal with.

If you follow Shauna's instructions in these two articles, it will work as
you want it to.
