Hmm - just looked at the time stamp on the database from yesterday - even
though I renamed it, it has a modified timestamp of today at 7:21 AM. So
somehow, Entourage is using this renamed version. How can I convince
Entourage to use the database from my backup?

Did you reload just the database file or the whole Identity folder? By
"reloading" do you mean you copied it into
~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities/Main Identity

When you "restore" a database, I've found it's best to copy the entire
Identity folder.
