Move DOWN the message list as I delete messages?

I've looked and looked, and I can't seem to find out how to do this (in both entorage & Mac Mail) - how do I get the program to move DOWN to the next message to preview it & maybe delete it, instead of jumping UP to the latest message?

Note: I do not want to open the next message after deleting.

Any suggestions? where am I missing this mailbox behavior that seemed so easy in Outlook?

Use these keyboard commands:

Option-Command-[ = Delete and select previous message
Option-Command-] = Delete and select next message

Without the Option key the commands will simply move to either the
previous or next message.

For a complete list of keyboard shortcuts for Entourage select Help -->
Entourage Help and search for "Entourage keyboard shortcuts".

Hope this helps!

Thanks, Bill -
that does provide a solution, but, I was hoping that I could just set up the preferences to do that w/o extra keystrokes - i often either click on the trash or just hit the delete button.

I don't suppose there are any choices buried somewhere that would allow me to setup the program(s) to perform the action I seek?

Appreciate the note-

One trick often overlooked is the space bar.

Use the spacebar to easily go through your mail. Tap the spacebar to go to
the next message, or hold down the spacebar to scroll down through a message
slowly and continuously. Works in 3 pane View. View --> Preview Pane --> on
right.

I tend to hold onto messages so deleting as I read is not important to me.
If you use View --> Unread only, the read messages are not seen. Once a week
I go through and delete old messages.

Apart from Diane's spacebar command suggestion, how are you wanting this
to work? Using keyboard commands, mouse-clicks, something else? I guess
I'm not quite sure how you're wanting to work.

I Open Entourage; preview pane open. Starting from a few messages from the top, I start to delete or junk messages that don't matter.

Then the highlighted/selected message is the next one above, instead of the one below.

I'd like to delete/junk, and then have the next message be the next one down, instead of up.

I Open Entourage; preview pane open.

If you will use preview pane on the right you can toggle the up/down arrow
to rearrange the messages.

Are you receiving all of your mail in the Inbox?

A

ARCTOS_Inspector

yes, no problem receiving messages, etc. I just want to "order" the program to move downwards as I scroll/delete/junk items. Delete something and it highlights upwards. I want to go downwards as I work.

I'm having the same problem. Here's why (I think):

I have my mail displayed in reverse-sent order - in other words: the newest
messages appear at the top of the list. Under "Preferences / Mail and News
Preferences" I have chosen to "Open the Next Message" when moving or
deleting mail. Apparently, in Entourage, that means the next message in
sent/received order, regardless of how you're displaying the messages (which
is why your selection moves up, instead of down).

I don't think we can fix this ourselves. I think Microsoft needs to use the
sort order we choose in determining the next message, instead of using
chronological order sent/received.

In Outlook on Windows - it uses whatever order you choose to display
messages to determine the next message and it works the way you'd expect it
to. It just works.

I'd call this a bug, but MS will argue that it's not. At the least, it is
more limited functionality than you get in Outlook.

PS: I only use keyboard shortcuts to delete and move mail (I have hundreds
of mail folders and can't afford to drag and drop).

This is frustrating to me, as well. I just migrated from Outlook. In Outlook, if you deleted a message, the highlight bar would move DOWN to the next message in the list. In Entourage, it moves UP to a message you have already skipped as one you don't want to delete. Instead of being able to deal with a block of junk mail by just using the delete key, now it takes many more keystrokes.

Are you using the Junk Mail Filter? Usually, I can scan to see if any are
good messages. Act on those, then select all and nuke the rest. How in the
world do you have time to view each piece of junk mail?

Try using these keyboard shortcuts documented in Entourage help:

OPTION+COMMAND (Apple)+[ Delete the current message and display the
previous message.

====
OPTION+Command (Apple)+] Delete the current message and display the next
message.

====
CTRL+OPTION+[ Delete the current message and display the previous unread
message.

====
CTRL+OPTION+] Delete the current message and display the next unread
message.

I appreciate the keystroke tips, however, as the other reader mentioned: this somewhat defeats the purpose of selecting a block of mail, or, working as i did when I was in PC-windows-outlook. Seems I'm not the only one with this mild irritation - we get Office for Mac, but not quite....

And, yes, I have all the junk/spam email filters on. It just keeps coming & coming faster than I can set rules!

I have one junk rule other than using the Junk Mail Filter. It's to exclude
mail "sent by me."

The key to managing junk is to have a good Address Book. The JMF never
assigns messages from contacts in your Address Book to the Junk category.

See this page for understanding Entourage's Junk Mail Filter.

You also might be happier with SpamSieve. Highly recommended by users.

Thanks, Diane and Mickey, for attempting to help. But I guess unless you've been used to Outlook, it's hard to understand what we're driving at.

The way Entourage moves UP the list to highlight a previously skipped over message (instead of the next one down the list) just seems so counter-intuitive.

What would help is a simple preference to set what happens - up or
down in the list after delete. It's what ARCTOS suggested in the third
message in this thread - but no one seemed to notice. The keystroke
options are useful but a preference to set the direction on a simple
delete (and it should be the same whether "delete message" is
activated by menu or via the delete key) would be useful.

Whether up/down represents newer/older, larger/smaller, etc should
depend on the sort order of the list.

.... and a nice to have...
Most Mac keyboards (and PCs) have both a forward delete and a backward
delete keys. One use of these when in a list would be to delete and
move down or delete and move up. Some Mac keyboards (notable MacBooks
and Powerbooks) lack the forward delete key though so it wouldn't work
in all situations. You could jettison this suggestion if it doesn't
fit with the more basic needs above.

A

ARCTOS_Inspector

Thanks for catching onto that, IanF. FYI, you can get a "Forward delete" out of your MacBook Pro - hold the Fn key down, then hit the delete button. Works like a charm, but, alas, does not solve the feature request we're all chattin' about here.

It is counter-intuitive. Add me to the group that REALLY misses this
functionality.

I submitted a request for this to be added to a future version of
Entourage...
