movie goes sraight to end of file immediately - why?

I've tried every way offered to insert a movie (.mpg file which runs in Win
Media Player OK ) but all I get is a black rectangle which on double click,
or run slideshow or 'play movie' flickers only. Where a progress bar shows,
it seems to indicate that the movie goes directly from start to finish
immediately.
How do I correct this?

Probably because the path is too long.
Create a folder (probably in C:\), move the movie and ppt file to the folder.
Re-insert the movie and see if it works.

If not, check this out for more troubleshooting:

pfcmedia failed to load movies - each time it gave error mess 9990 "this
media file contains corrupt data or Digital Rights Management, processing
halted" even though I made the movies myself (Ulead software) and it works
fine everywhere else.
What next?

tried short path - no better!

went thro the article:
1.movies will not play onMCI media player - just go straight to endoffile.
2.checked registries - OK other than two missing MCI extensions for
mpegvideo2 - dont know how to add them but suspect this is not the problem.
3.cant find ref to 'multimedia' in my control panel or elsewhere so could
not do these checks. Not even a ref to it on WinXP disc! I'm on WinXP
Professional ver 2002 SP2.
4 downloaded MS files and PFCmedia and a new driver from Nvidia for my vidio
card - PC failed to reboot windows - had to do system restore back 2 hrs to
get going again.
No success with PPt.

went to gin bottle and wrote these replies - a great day!
looking forward to your responses.

There's the problem Andy. (ULead) What format did you save the video too?
Reason I ask is that ULeads codecs do not work with the MCI player. (As a
note, this is why PCFMedia is reporting there is corrupted data in the
file.) Your best bet is to save the video as an UNCOMPRESSED AVI and let
PFCMedia handle it from there. (It will take care of the compression for
you.)

Thanks Austin, I had saved them all to .mpg. Ulead also offer the .wmv format
to render to and this works fine with PPt, even with a long file address path.
So thanks everyone for your help. I hope I can get knowledgeable enough
about something to help others in the future.

Hi, i'm back!
This is a follow-on question from andy:
I have created a Powerpoint presentation with some slides carrying links to
videos (in the form of .mpg files on the laptop). It all works just fine on
the laptop screen. When I came, this evening in the gathering, to run it thro
a projector, all the stills projected fine. When it got to the movies,
however, the slide frame came up but the movie did not (neither picture nor
sound).

We rushed round and got a second, different projector - no difference! We
tried to run the .mpg liles individually using Windows Media Player - again
fine on laptop screen, but only a black rectangle in the WMP frame, with the
progress button happily moving from left to right on its track, on the
projector.

It would seem that the .mpg file contents is not being sent to the projector
by the laptop!

What am I doing wrong?

I tried two suggestions which got me nowhere -disable video hardware
acceleration, and toggle between monitors(my manual says Fn F3 will do this
but it only makes the remote monitor flicker briefly - I wonder why?!)

After another suggestion (the long fix) made by Steve which did work in its
limited way, and following this principle to a crazy solution, here it is:

set remote monitor/projector to be the primary screen by using START/CONTROL
PANEL/DISPLAY/SETTINGS and double click screen 2 (if not enabled, do so)
/PROPERTIES/DISPLAYS - make 2nd monitor/projector the PRIMARY screen.

open PPt presentation file on the secondary screen/projector and RESTORE
(top right) window if maximised. Use mouse to drag the window over to the
laptop screen and MAXIMISE it.

In PPt use SLIDESHOW/SETUP SHOW. Select " show on PRIMARY MONITOR".
run slideshow.

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!
It shows the slide show, including movies, to the audience and the file
creation screen with notes etc to the laptop operater.
[at least it does on my Compaq Pressario with Win ME and PPt2000 , and using
another monitor to simulate the projector].

is there a better way? Surely there must be!
