Movies play on computer but not on projector image

Jim Keenan

Hi,

Several colleagues and I are having a similar problem with
PowerPoint, both in PPT 2000 & PPT 2003/XP. We can install
and play movie files in our powerpoint slides, and they
work fine on the computer, but as soon as you put the
image through a projector then all you get where the movie
should be is a black square/rectangle. The movie is
playing away happily on the computer but nothing can be
seen on the projected image.

This is a problem which seems to affect some computers and
not others, but more are affected than not.

Thanks

Jim

This problem is seen with some graphic cards. Try one of the following:
1. Decrease hardware acceleration:
1.1 In PowerPoint 2003/2002(XP), clear the check against the "Use hardware
graphics acceleration" box in "Slide Show" | "Set Up Show..." dialog box.
1.2 If [1.1] did not help then, in Windows, decrease hardware acceleration:
- Select "Start" | "Settings" | "Control Panel" menu item.
- Launch "Display" applet.
- In "Display Properties" dialog box, select "Settings" tab.
- Click "Advanced" button. From now on, things could vary depending on the
graphics card your machins has.
- In the new dialog box, select "Troubleshoot".
- Decrease "Hardware acceleration" using the slider.
- Click OK till you have dismissed all dialog boxes.

2. If [1] did not help, then try switching the "Primary" and "Secondary"
monitors in the same "Advanced" dialog box. Configuring this is highly
dependent on the graphics card model.

Can you provide the list of the graphics card type/model on the machines
where the movie does not work?

Something else to try that has worked reliably for me for several years
is to show the slideshow only on the projector. Using the Fn + F5 (for
Toshiba laptops, the combination varies by manufacturer), you can
decide where the image is shown: laptop only, projector only, laptop +
projector. [Some laptops will have more choices including a TV
option.]

For those laptops where the graphics driver will not show the movie on
both the projector and the laptop *and* if I don't want to mess with
various PP / Windows settings, I use Fn+F5 to select 'projector only'
just before the movie starts and use Fn+F5 to select 'laptop +
projector' after the movie ends. Not the most elegant since the
selection process itself will be visible through the projector.
