Moving Outlook info to another computer

L

Larry Stone

I would like to move my Outlook files to a new P IV
computer. I believe that the file Outlook.pst will
include the email boxes, calendar and schedule, but I
don't know how to move either the POP3 accounts (I have
quite a few), settings, or the email rules (such as which
box to move what email into). I would like to have to
avoid setting this all up from scratch, so I hope someone
there has a solution.

I am also considering going back to Outlook Express for my
email, since I use the contacts and calendar function in
Outlook extensively to coordinate with my PocketPC. Does
anyone know how to export file information form Outlook to
Outlook Express (including the data base info, accounts,
and email rules).

Thanks for any assistance. Larry

You can export from Outlook or import in OE. Any reason you'd want to have
two clients, Outlook and OE? Your Outlook and OE contacts won't be in sync,
so whatever you get on your PocketPC will just be the stale stuff from
Outlook.

Post your versions of each program and if Outlook 98 or 2000, post the mode
under Help->About, second line should say Internet Mail Only or Corporate or
Workgroup. A correct and helpful answer depends on this information being
supplied.

I'm using Outlook 2002, SP3 in Windows 2000. If I use
Outlook Express for my mail, it would be version 6.

In Outlook 2002, your rules are stored within your .pst file so there is no
separate file to save. As for accounts, Outlook 2002 does not have the
ability to export your accounts. You may want to migrate your accounts to
Outlook Express 6, then export them from there for future installation into
Outlook 2002. And all future installations of Outlook as well.

Hi Millie,

Thanks for your answer. What exactly do you mean
by "migrate". Is there an automated way to do that, or
does that mean to copy everything manually?

If I do decide to keep on using Outlook for my email, can
I just copy the current Outlook.pst to the comparable
directory in the new computer, or will that risk somehow
fouling up that computers version of Outlook? Right now,
I have them networked through a router, but I want to get
everything moved that I can before wiping out the old
computer.

The reason I am thinking of bringing my email back to
Outlook Express is that I want to separte it from my
calendar and contact list. I use the latter for
professional purposes, and have realized that Outlook has
grown immense with all the email that I often save in
various email boxes. Any thoughts on this, or is it not a
practical solution? How can I best export from Outlook
and into OE?

It depends what you want. I personally like to keep everything in Outlook.
You could set up additional PST files and move older items there to keep
stuff separate & keep your PST file small. How big is your PST file now?
How can I best export from Outlook
and into OE?

File, import/export wizard....
