Moving Outlook to a different computer

L

Larry Stone

When moving Outlook to a different computer, (Outlook 2002
in Windows 2000 OS), can I just copy the current
Outlook.pst to the comparable directory in the new
computer, or will that risk somehow fouling up that
computers version of Outlook? Right now, I have them
networked through a router, but I want to get
everything moved that I can before wiping out the old
computer. Also, are there any files in addition to
Outlook.pst that need to be moved in order to be sure to
get all of the information, including email accounts,
calendar, contacts, etc?

I was able to move most of my data by copying the
Outlook.PST file, and also copying the .fav, .nk2, and the
other files in D&S\username\application
data\Microsoft\Outlook, with ONE exception: None of my
email accounts showed up. Since I have over a dozen
different accounts, I really want to find a way to copy
them to the new computer, rather than entering them by
hand. Any ideas will be appreciated.

You e-mail accounts are a separate item.

Go to Tools, Accounts...
Select Mail tab, then click on each E-mail account in turn and export to a
floppy or wherever.
Take floppy to new machine and import. You're accounts are now transferred.
PS be careful with that floppy as the settings include the account
passwords. Anyone who finds the disc can read your mail.

Note, however, that no current version of Outlook has this option. This was
only an option in the little seen IMO mode of Outlook 98/2000.
Outlook provides no option for exporting account information. In theory, you
can use the Windows File and Settings Transfer Wizard for this, but I can't
say I recommend it.

How can I find and use the Windows File and Settings
Tranfer Wizard? Why do you not recommend it? The account
information must be in some file on the computer (or in
the registry), so why couldn't that file be located (if
the name was known) and simply copied over like anything
else?

It's usually in the Windows XP Start menu > Accessories > System Tools.
Users have had mixed results with it. Just be careful you only migrate what
you intend to.

You don't know what you're talking about. The OP is working with Outlook
and you are giving advice for Outlook Express. That usually won't work.

In Outlook, accounts are in the Mail Profile, stored in the Registry.

Larry,

I'm not certain if I answered your question or someone
elses??? Anyway, you can move the file. Read through
recent responses and if you still can't find my post on
the subject, e-mail me at the above address, and I'll
explain to you how it is done.

Of course, take out the "removethis" part of my address.
