MS Office EULA

J

Jim Rieger

Is it true that I can install my MS Office on one PC and one laptop? I
bought 2003 retail and installed it first on my laptop. Then, after
installing on the PC and trying to use one of the components (e.g. Outlook),
I get the message that my licence is used up. By the way, I inquired about
licences at Comp USA and Micro Center and THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT I WAS TALKING
ABOUT. Thanks for any help.

Please refer to your specific Office version and read the EULA:

Places like Comp USA and Micro Center hire people off of the street and then
don't offer them real training. Actually, the same holds true for most
retail places. The companies don't believe they should invest the money in
sales people who know their products. And, sadly, most employees will not
spend their time off work teaching themselves.

The info you need is in the EULA, about the second paragraph down. To read
the EULA on your computer, open any component of Office (Word, Excel, etc.)
and click on Help. Select "About" from the drop down menu and you'll see a
link to the EULA, click on that and you'll probably see that you're correct,
if you have the retail version you can install on one desktop and one laptop.

Are you getting the message only when you open a component on the desktop or
do you get the same message on the laptop as well?

Did it activate OK?

You might try removing and re-installing on the desktop if it's the only one
causing the problem, not a fix, just something that sometimes works when
strange things happen.

By the way, I'm not surprised that Comp USA and Micro Center didn't have a
clue, license questions are really not their area of expertise, it's pretty
much a question for Microsoft or for here.

Give us some more information about the problem and I'll bet someone here can
give you an answer.

I get the message that my licence is used up.

What's the *exact* text of the error message?

As others have mentioned, you should (generally) be able to install on a
desktop and a laptop, but check the EULA just to be sure.

Thanks. Permitted on only one computer. Then the question becomes is it
possible to purchase an additional licence for the software I already own?

Thanks David. No problems on the laptop, and the problem on the PC occurs
when I try to activate. Meantime, I read the EULA carefully, and it does say
only ONE installation is permitted. So the question becomes is it possible
to purchase a second license for the software I already own. Thanks for your
help. JR

Thanks Peter. Actually my EULA reads differently in (b). It says access and
use of the software is permitted in a remote desktop environment. Looks like
I get only one installation. Then the question becomes is it possible to
purchase a second license for the software I already own.. Thanks for your
help.

It sounds like you have an OEM version of Office. There are no discount
prices for people who want a second license. You must purchase a full
version. Ironically, once you do, you'll be allowed to install it on one
desktop and one laptop.

Yes, you can buy another license but it's costly.
Look around here for information on getting an additional license:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/default.mspx

I'm wondering if you would consider a different version, such as OfficeXP or
Office97? They're available discounted from various sources and you'd save a
bit of money. Also, you might investigate OpenOffice at
http:\\www.openoffice.org, it's free and will open almost all MS Office
applications.

If you need Office 2003 then you need to do some websearching for the best
price. Google is always good but if I'm looking for best price I like
http://www.search.com because they'll bring up sponsored links to comparison
shopping sites.

Hi Jim,

You mentioned in your original message that you purchased
Office 2003 retail. If it was included with a computer
then the license agreement tying it to the machine (OEM license)
would apply. If you purchased it separately (boxed) as a retail
copy then the computer store basically erred as the retail
copies do allow the desktop+portable of the same person.
