MS Outlook vs. Entourage 2004?

L

Lenny

I would like to buy a Mac, but Outlook XP Pro is my primary
productivity tool. I have years of contact and other data in Outlook
that I work with all during the day. I've heard that Entourage isn't
nearly as featured or functional as Outlook for PCs. If that's true,
it would a strong reason to stay with PCs.

Has anyone used both recently and able comment on this? Thanks!

Hi Lenny,

I hope the following information is useful.

Does Entourage have the following?:

1. Full access to both IMAP and POP functionality when connecting to
Exchange 2003.

Yes, you can go through the following link.
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downlo...c/DOWNLOAD/office2004/WorkingWithExchange.xml

2. Closer integration of LDAP services? Specifically, can the Entourage
client be configured to auto-fill addresses in the To field of a message by
checking against an LDAP directory?

It is a Find and address function. Doesn't work like check name in Windows /
PC environment

3. Proper handling of Mac resource forks with attachments (including
possible double fork files i.e. .tex files).

I need more details on this point. There is no problem is opening
attachments.

4. Is Entourage capable of using Drag-n-Drop attachment functionality?

Yes

5. What is, or describe the level of IM integration with Entourage?

IM is not integrated with Entourage. MSN messenger is a independent install.

6. What is the quality, or level of integration of Filters (SPAM) into the
Entourage Product?

SPAM filter can be enabled with desired level of low or high or very high
where you specify exclusive SMTP domains.

7. Does the Entourage client access the Exchange server the same way the PC
Outlook client does, or does it rely on an IMAP or POP setup?

Entourage access Exchange through HTTP. PC outlook uses RPC to talk to
Exchange Server.

Web Client (Outlook Web Access 2003)

1. Is the Mac browser compatible (IE, Netscape, Safari, Mozilla) with
Outlook Web Access 2003? Are there any known issues in this regard?

IE, Netscape, Safari and Mozilla are able to access OWA 2003 but as
down-level client. The Outlook 2003 look and feel is not available. Please
find enclosed snap shots taken on a Mac OS X 10.3.5 using a Mozilla 1.7.2
and Netscape 7.2 while accessing a Exchange 2003 server on OWA. I have also
checked it using FBA i.e. Https enabled exchange 2003 server.

2. Is there full access to folder structure (mailbox folders) and the
ability to reorganize mail when accessing Outlook Web Access 2003 through
the browser using a Mac?

3. Are there any functions, features, or folders that are unavailable
through a Mac browser when accessing Outlook Web Access 2003?

Answer for both the points.

Getting the folder list can be very slow if you have a bunch of them.

The list of public folders is not saved, it is downloaded every time you
click on the top level public folders container.

In light of the above points, you will want to download the list as
infrequently as possible. You can subscribe to your favorite public folders
in Entourage and then you don't have to download the list again. Subscribed
folders in Entourage are not added to Outlook public folders Favorites list,
nor the other way around.

There is no support for Public Folders contacts or events.

There is no support for direct posting to a public folder, but sending will
still work if a public folder has an SMTP address, and you can drag existing
messages in entourage to a public folder.

Other Clients

1. Any known issues concerning basic IMAP/POP use with other mail clients
(Outlook Express, Apple Mail, Eudora).

None.

Calendaring:

1. Is there full functionality and the ability to have both public and
private shared Group Calendars via web access?

2. Is there full functionality to calendaring via Web access using a Mac?

Answer for both the points.

Entourage doesn't detect if an invite is out of date or conflicts with other
events

Entourage does not support Outlook's invite counterproposals

If possible, don't run Outlook and Entourage at the same time, as it may
result in duplicate reminders

Project:

1. What is the level, if any, of integration with Sharepoint Server?"

None. There is no integration with Share Point Server. Office 2004 has
Project Center which is a different thing altogether.

3. Proper handling of Mac resource forks with attachments (including
possible double fork files i.e. .tex files).

I need more details on this point. There is no problem is opening
attachments.

As long as the attachment is encoded using AppleDouble or compressed with
Stuffit, Entourage can handle it properly.
5. What is, or describe the level of IM integration with Entourage?

IM is not integrated with Entourage. MSN messenger is a independent install.

Actually Entourage 2004 will show MSN messenger online status for contacts
with IM addresses in your address book. The status shows up in an icon next
to the contact name in mail messages and in the address book.

I use Entourage 2004 on my primary computer and Outlook 2003 on another
computer. Outlook 2003 has more "network" features (such as calendar
sharing, etc.) but overall the programs are similar. If you send me a list
of the specific features you need (joelwnelson AT msn DOT com) I'll let you
know which features exist in Entourage.
