MSI must be launched through setup

Peter

Hi Group ,

I am having a curious problem since about one week now, which I can
not solve. I always get the message:

"This MSI must be launched through setup !"

when I start Word, Excel or Powerpoint. I simply have to click 3 times
on the OK-Button, then the application comes up normally and works
without any problem.
Outlook, Access and Frontpage however do not show this behaviour. I am
using Offixe XP (SP-3) on Win XP Pro (SP-2), all german versions.

The above situation occured after having succesfully installed Norton
Internet Securiyt 2005, which runs flawlessly. I do not know, if there
are any connections, but before that installation, Office was OK.

I already have started setup and performed a repair-installation, no
success.

Many Thanks in advance for your advices !

Peter

I am having this same problem whenever I start MS Word 2003. It appeared
about a week ago for reasons I don't understand.

OK -- Microsoft -- what's the answer? I paid for the product, I bought the
operating system, I validated the operating system so I could get the updates
to fix the security problems, I had to have a passport to even sign up to
respond to post this message -- what more do you want? -- all I want is an
answer to this question. I don't want to have to pay more money to call
somebody at MS. This is all crazy talk with no resolution. MS I have been a
loyal fan from the beginning. I have directed business towards you that you
don't even know about. You will lose your customers as soon as someone comes
along with a better option. Sorry -- I just get frustrated when you can't
get a resolution to what has to be a simple problem.

I have the excact same problem after installing Norton Internet Security
2005. After reboot/starting the PC or trying to use Word 2003 the Windows
Installer start and a new box show "Norton Antivirus 2005 does not support
the Repair feature, please uninstall and reinstall". after click OK 3 times,
the installer disapear and the PC open and ready to use. Using Word the
problem is nearly the same, the Windows Installer start and a box show "This
MSI must be launched through setup" - after click OK 3 times it disapears and
Word opens. I wrote Symantec, but havn't got the answer yet, so I will be
back, if there is any help to get!

I'm really beginning to dislike MS. I used to be a huge fan of theirs. I've
contributed enough money to build a wing of Gates mansion. However, they
just don't seem to "get" how to create a pleasant and safe user experience.
They have made it so hard for the average user to simply sit down and use the
computer. At my place of employment (25,000+ people) we don't even allow 97%
of the people to even use IE. The other 3% use a very stripped down version
that is not alterable. We rebuild it nightly on al workstations. I think it
is time for the DOJ to take another look at MS. Okay -- I'll stop preaching.

Here is what I did to "fix" the problem. I uninstalled Symantec NAV 2005
and Office 2003. I suggest you make sure registry entries are clean as well.
That is, look for Symantec and Norton key words in the registry. Don't
forget to delete folders marked Norton or Symantec. NAV 2005 does a crappy
job of cleaning itself up. I re-installed both products. This time I got a
meaningful message from NAV when I tried to run MS Word. I went into options
/ miscellaneous in NAV and turned off the Office Plug-in. The problem
disappeared.
After I did all of this nonsense I read the Symantec article on this thread.

It appears NAV doesn't really want you to move their links around -- you
have to go through the Start menu to make things work. So much for
"personal" computer and customization.

Anyway -- I suppose the problem isn't really MS but Symantec. Now I can
hate them both!

I have just had the same problem as you and others seem to be having problems
with missing MSI files. I am running Win XP Pro, Office 2003 Pro and Nortons
SystemWorks 2005.
I have fixed this problem on my system by doing the following:
Insert your Office CD and open Word (what ever version you are using)
In the help file drop down list, click on repair and let the CD do it's
thing and repair your Office installation
Uninstall any version of Nortons (Internet Security, SystemWorks, NAV) and
reinstall
I have just done all of the above and the MSI error message no longer
appears in any of MS Office.
So far, it would appear that I have fixed this error on my system.
Don't forget to update your Nortons after reinstalling
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Ian Sorensen
