multiple downloads problem with Entourage 2004/10.3.9

Other people have reported this bug before (for years) but no one
seems to have come up with an answer, nor has MS fixed it apparently
because my Entourage started doing it out of the blue a month or two
ago (after an Office update maybe?). In my case, unless I delete
messages from my POP server manually, Entourage will download them
again (and again) until I do. And will do so consistently, not just
once in a while. But it seems to be timed to the time I've set for
messages to be deleted from my server, which is now 2 days. It also
does tend to happen after the computer has been asleep, like when I
check for messages in the morning - maybe always, I'm not sure.

Can anyone suggest a solution rather than a work-around?

No workround, but it is likely that the problem lies with the way your pop
server works. Many servers seem to suddenly loose the ability to retain
delivered mail 9and Entourage is by no means the only client to suffer from
this). I suspect that the rules in this area are somewhat vague, and the
server doesn't agree with everyone else's interpretation of them.
