Music on web site

Annette Delaney

In the past, I have placed music on my web site using *.ram and a *.rm
files. The *.ram file is a metafile created by a text editor and the *ram
file is created by Real Producer.

I am finding that music produced this way is taking too long to buffer and
stopped several times while playing in order for more music to buffer.

Is there a better way to do this? If so, how?

Great! Thanks.

There are times when I would like to stream a speech rather than music. The
speech is often on tape or cd. Is there a way to convert such recordings to
MP3 so that I can use your instuctions for streaming this media?

Annette,
To convert your speech ( WAV ) to MP3
Open MusicMatch Jukebox and go to:
File....Convert...Select Source Files, set destination directory
on the slide bar set the bitrate 56Kbps, or 32 Kbps, or 24 Kbps.
Then click start to begin

Remember

adjust the sliding control to the bitrate you desire.
Here's how you decide:

greater than 56Kbps Not recommended. This bitrate is too high and will cause skipping in your
broadcast.
56 Kbps High quality, but only listeners with high bandwidth can enjoy.
32 Kbps Medium quality, and listeners with 56K connection and higher can listen.
24 Kbps Lowest quality (similar to AM radio), but everyone with 28.8K connection or higher can
enjoy.

I hope this helps

Annette,
I have found that using the microsoft products along with
FrontPage is much quicker. Assuming that you have little
experience with the windows media streaming. Here is a
link for a add in for the windows media player for
FrontPage
http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/downloads/addin/launchu
pdate/searchdetail.asp?a=378
Once you download and install this tool, it will reside
in FrontPage in the top tool bar in the dropdown list
under "Insert"
From there, its step by step wizard.
Kool tool...
If you care to check out how this tool looks and works
before you try it, go to my http://www.okcityusa.com
site. On the first page on the right hand side you will
see OKCityUSA.com music. The dropdown list five songs
that reside on my remote site server... picking one from
the list, it begins to download this file very quickly,
within a few seconds and begins to play.
Below that dropdown list is a link that says "Click Here
for some Music Video's". Clicking on that will open a
browser windows with the windows media player that will
start streaming Music Video's.
Note: Windows media player 9 will convert MP3's to WMA's
or WMV's, {windows media audio / video} for uploading to
your site server...
If you have further questions, email me @
(e-mail address removed)

Annette-
CD would be the easiest, as you can just copy with Windows Media Player.
I usually set WMP to set at 128K which will give you just as good if not
better sound than an MP3. To reduce the file size I use Windows Media
Encoder. You can also use it to capture live audio from the Line In port on
your audio card to digitize your tapes. Media Encoder can output different
qualities of files as needed for different bandwidth situations. In regards
to CDs and pre-recorded tapes, be mindful of copyrights.

Hi Carlos,
What do you think this link is that I give on my page ( http://dtiwebs.com/streaming.htm )

and the reason I am using musicmach to rip is because I can set the bitrate

Mike do you think that people with 28.8K, 56K connection can hear at 128K ? ( Cable and DSL
only )

Hi DTI,
I really like your website, great work and information.
I stand corrected; you can not convert MP3's to WMA's
without having the windows mp3 decoder plug-in.
On the other hand... as for maximizing the conversion,
you can use the Windows Media Encoder 9 Series download
free. This tool will do both video and audio
conversions / Rips.
As for bit rate, well, for audio, you have several
choices depending on the source you want to hear the
music played through. Steaming over the internet, your
choices are as follows.
Windows Media server (Streaming), Web Server (progressive
download), Windows Media Hardware Profiles, Pocket PC or
File Archive.
Assuming we want to use the Windows Media Server
(Streaming) as our choice of playing the music over the
internet, you then have more choices. Multiple bit rate
audio (CBR), CD quality audio, FM quality audio, Voice
quality audio or Multichannel audio (CBR)'s. I personally
stick with Multiple bit rate audio (CBR). Choosing this
Audio encode CBR, lets me then choose the bit rate, 135
Kbps, 70 Kbps, 54 Kbps, 45Kbps, 37 Kbps, 24 Kbps, 19
Kbps, 15 Kbps, 13 Kbps or 11 Kbps.
I am not sure DTI, but I would be willing to bet that
even if your internet modem connection were only 24kps
baud rate, you will hear it at 11 Kbps.
Yep, and that's not all, the next screen before actually
encoding the MP3 to WMA, you can give the file a Title:,
Author:, Copyright: Rating: and Description information
that the person who is hearing the song over the internet
can visually see right on the windows media player. Wow,
incredible. An all in one converter that can do the same
job and more than that third party MusicMatch Jukebox
that is made for the Windows Media Play 9 Series
player... Yaaahhhhoooo...
I think it would be fare to say, that your way DTI, Will
and Does work.
My point DTI was this, Using FrontPage as your website
publishing tool, made by Microsoft and adding Video
and/or Audio MAY be better if you used Microsoft's
complimentary tools to do the conversion for streaming
audio / video over the IE, Microsoft browser... End of
Story...
By the way, you can download the Windows Media Encoder 9
Series by going here.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/enco
der/default.aspx
I promise you will not regret what this tool can do for
Streaming Media over the internet.

A Guy who loves choices, and one that can hear, feel and
smell the music...

Did you miss the part of the post referring to using WME to reduce the
file size? You change the bit rate there. I use 32k mono and dial up gets
it fine

Unfortunately *you* cannot any of the *current* MS encoder offerings.
However there are older versions of Media Encoder that would work, such as
version 4. Many people may be using 95 98 & ME, but I am sure they will
find as you have that todays software is not being written for it as 95 is
obsolete, 98 will be obsolete in 6 months, and ME will be obsolete before
years end.
