Must I close out of Office 2004 to Change User

D

Dave

Just uploaded Office 2004 Entourage for Mac. I have both my wife and
myself as accounts. However, often when I select to switch users, a
pop-up window instructs me that in order to do this, I need to close
out of all Office 2004 apps and then re-open Entourage When I do that,
I can readily switch between my wife's account and my own. Any clues
how I can fix this glitch?

Hi Dave,
it's not a glitch, it's intentional. The reason: the other Office
applications access the currently running identity for a number of items,
such as contacts. By quitting all Office applications (except for Entourage,
which, theoretically, you *should* not have to quit), you make sure that no
programs are accessing your identity and its related Entourage data. It's
been discussed quite heatedly in this newsgroup, and some people are unhappy
with the way Office handles identities, but at the moment, there's nothing
you can do about it, I'm afraid.

Thanks for the insight, Michel. I should go back and read the string on
the Entourage identify issue. Unfortunately, I also have to close out
of Entourage, as well. Fortunately, my wife uses the account all day
and I only switch it over once in the evening, so it's more of an
annoyance than anything. I didn't have this issue in the old Outlook
Express on my G3, however.

Well, if I remember correctly, Outlook Express was not as tightly integrated
into Office (98/2001) as Entourage is in current versions. The only real
connection between OE and Office was the spellcheck function, as OE used
Word's spellcheck dictionaries. I may of course be wrong about this, as I've
never used OE, except once or twice when exploring Mac OS 9 on my iMac G4.

An alternative method, which is better than having separate identities in
the same OS user (this method was inherited from Entourage 2001 in OS 9), is
to have separate OS user accounts for you and your wife. Then - in Tiger and
Panther - enable Fast User Switching in System
Preferences/Accounts/(unlock)/Login Options.

Now you just have to do a Fast Switch to your wife's user and her Entourage
can be up and running without your having to quit any Office apps. Both of
your identities can be open at the same time, checking messages.
