My Entourage will not even start up!!

N

nrg_design

I have been having some problems with my email... I am currently
running 10.1.6 on a Power PC-MAC G4 tower. Currently my database says
it is 2.13GB in size.
Recently I got a message that I needed to make more space. I did that
and performed a typical rebuild. Everything worked fine for about 1
week.
Then I was working and then I came back to the computer and had a
mysterious email that was tagged "unread" and when I tried to read or
delete it - Entourage FROZE! I'm panicing at this point...thinking my
computer was on the fritz.

I went in and read some online about what to do to try and fix the
problem. So I did a "Advanced Rebuild" this seemed to work for a bit.
At this point after it restarted - I dragged most of the folders inside

Entourage [sent, inbox, drafts, exported contacts etc] so I would have

a record of - but I couldn't figure how to do the calendar??

Now when I try to start up the program - it acts like it will open then

shuts down. No Luck.
I run a home based business and ALL my contacts and appointments are in

the program HELP!!

I have tried deleting the pref folder [put it on the desktop] and took
the .plist and deleted that - still nothing!
What should I do now?? There is NO support for this type of problem!
Sincerely going nuts

The message about needing more space IS your problem. When you do a rebuild,
Entourage makes a duplicate of your database. You can throw these away after
you are satisfied that the rebuild was successful. This will free up some
space, but if your computer is balking you will need more than this to keep
your data safe. I'm not just talking about your Entourage data, but ALL your
data.

First, open the Microsoft User Data folder in your Documents folder. In your
Office 2004 Identities folder (you didn't specify your version of Entourage
so I am using 2004. Substitute your version if different). Your Identity is
called Main by default. You should see your rebuild Identity as Main [Backed
up 1-21-2007 13.35]. For older versions of Entourage the names are:

Entourage X: "Old Database Cache" and "Old Database"

Entourage 2001: "Old Database Cache", "Old Database", and "Old Messages." In
addition, Database (Rebuild) Cache is retained.

You can delete these or if you have the ability to save to another source,
you might want the latest as backups in case you are having problems with
your current Identity.

To check how much free space is available on your startup disk:

*In Finder, select your startup disk's icon. For most users, this is
Macintosh HD.
*Press the Command-I keyboard combination.
*The Get Info window for your startup disk will open.
*In the General pane, the Capacity, Available (free space), and space Used
on your startup disk will be displayed

Let me know what you find when you check your free space.

The operating system needs room to work and you need as much extra free
space on your disk as your physical memory size (in addition to the 10 - 20%
you should normally leave free for any OS X iteration). I suspect that you
have fragmentation also. My best advice is to purchase a firewire drive and
archive your important data and free up some space. You can find good
firewire drives for around $100 and since you use your computer for a
business this is a must.

Here' are a couple of sites that give tips on freeing up space.

<http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/freeingspace.html>

<http://creativebits.org/2004/11/os-x-free-up-hard-disk-space.html>

You also might want to consider iDefrag ($30): Defragmentation &
Optimization for Mac OS X. It supports optimized defragging as well as
simply (and quickly) joining free space into one continuous block. Also, it
respects the system hot files. At $30

Hi There Diane,

Thanks for your reply! I actualy have already compressed and deleted
the duplicates and the old database files and old cache etc. after my
susessful rebuild. I recently got a LACIE drive to back things up.
Should I copy all my data to the Lacie drive?

My version of MICROSOFT OFFICE X >> Entourage is 10.1.6. My Operating
system is OSX 10.4.8.

I have another internal hardrive [but is a OS standard disk: 74.56 GB]
My main drive is an OS Extended Disk: 28.62GB

My question would be - I have dragged a copy of my database to the
other drive [2.13GB]
and wanted to know if I can move Entourage to my other drive and run it
from there?

The bad part is that I can't even start up the program! It acts like it
is starting then stops.
The free space is available on my startup disk is 5.22GB [Main drive]

I am going to look over some of the sites you sent me.... thanks look
forward to your reply!

I would archive as much as possible to the Lacie drive. I don't know how
much you have on the internal that is the standard disk, but I would copy
all of it over and reformat it to extended to gain space. You can move
things back after reformat. FWIW, if you do this I would also install the OS
fresh. Start with a clean slate.
My version of MICROSOFT OFFICE X >> Entourage is 10.1.6. My Operating
system is OSX 10.4.8.

Latest Entourage X is 10.1.9. This update includes all of the improvements
released in all previous Office v. X updates.

I have another internal hardrive [but is a OS standard disk: 74.56 GB]

If you can reformat, I would make this my main drive.
My main drive is an OS Extended Disk: 28.62GB

Using your larger drive will be better for giving your applications room to
breathe. You don't mention how much RAM you have installed, but when things
get hungry the OS uses disk space to swap out for RAM. This really slows
things down. Then if you don't have enough HD space for this....trouble.
My question would be - I have dragged a copy of my database to the
other drive [2.13GB]

Not necessarily a good idea. You will have to make an alias in the Documents
folder and it could also be slower. I would find other things to move over
first that you don't access frequently.
The bad part is that I can't even start up the program! It acts like it
is starting then stops.

After you clear up some space, I would test first and if the problem still
exists, remove Entourage preferences to test for corruption or test in a new
User. ~/Library/Preferences/:

com.microsoft.OfficeNotifications.plist
com.microsoft.DatabaseDaemon.plist
com.microsoft.Entourage.plist
Microsoft/Entourage Preferences

Next step would be to use "Remove Office". Run "Remove Office" located in
the Office 2004 --> Additional Tools folder" then apply the Microsoft Office
v. X for Mac 10.1.9 Update.

You also might want to use the combo updater to "refresh" your OS. Doing so
overwrites potentially problem-causing files. Users have found this helped
with problems they were having with Entourage.

Hi Diane

I was wondering - most of my applications are on my main drive. and
Working files/customer etc are on my other internal larger drive...
When I reformat the disk am I going to loose my email data: messages,
addresses calendar etc?
When you say reformat - how do you do that>? I have upgraded to my
current OSX 10.4.8 do I use those disks?
I really don;t want to screw my computer up!!

My main drive is an OS Extended Disk: 28.62GB
Other internal hardrive [OS standard disk: 74.56 GB]
Processor: 466 MHz Power PC G4 [tower]
My memory: 1.12 GB SDRAM

How do I access my current email settings/info if I uninstall OfficeX?
This really worries me!

Also, I purchased a cinema screen and found out that my video card
won't work with it - so I am waiting on that to come in also. Changing
the video card won't effect memory will it??

My Lacie drive is 2TB because I am going to be doing some video this
year and needed the space for transfering large viedo files...
Is there a way to access this as a local drive? Will it be safe to use
this way?

Sorry for the 20 questions!

I was wondering - most of my applications are on my main drive. and

It's the applications that need the room. This includes the OS.

addresses calendar etc?

All of your data is in the Microsoft User Data folder inside the Documents
folder.
When you say reformat - how do you do that>?

Disk Utility has a reformat option. Use the OS install disks and select to
install on the drive you want reformatted. It will automatically format as
extended unless you select otherwise.
I have upgraded to my
current OSX 10.4.8 do I use those disks?
I really don;t want to screw my computer up!!

If this is the Apple OS install disk, yes.
My main drive is an OS Extended Disk: 28.62GB
Other internal hardrive [OS standard disk: 74.56 GB]
Processor: 466 MHz Power PC G4 [tower]
My memory: 1.12 GB SDRAM

Get more memory. At least 2GB.
How do I access my current email settings/info if I uninstall OfficeX?
This really worries me!

You can't access if you don't have the application installed. It should only
be for a couple of hours though. Install the OS and then Office. Move your
Microsoft User Data folder over to the new Documents folder BEFORE you open
Entourage and you'll be set to go. I suggest using the same user name and
password. This makes it less likely that there will be a permissions issue.
Also, I purchased a cinema screen and found out that my video card
won't work with it - so I am waiting on that to come in also. Changing
the video card won't effect memory will it??

I don't believe so.
My Lacie drive is 2TB because I am going to be doing some video this
year and needed the space for transfering large viedo files...
Is there a way to access this as a local drive? Will it be safe to use
this way?

I'm assuming it's a firewire drive. It should just mount when you startup.
If it's an internal then it should show up on the desktop as a volume. You
might want to partition that baby. :)

I can't believe you have all this space and are using an itty bitty 28 GB
drive as your startup drive.

Hi Diane

WAs told by another tech that I needed to upgrade to Office 2004 -
Entourage database was over the limit - so I have upgraded. Still
nothing! It acts like it will boot up then shuts down... I took lots
of stuff off my startup drive and copied over to the 2T drive.
You had mentioned "why I wasn't using up the big space I have"... Can
I switch startup drives and still run my programs off the main drive?

Anyhow:
I have a error report that it gave me here below:

Is the original database Entourage X? Entourage 2004 has to import the data
into the new database. If you exceeded the limit in Entourage X it could be
your data is too corrupted to export. See "Corrupt Database Fixes:"

<http://www.entourage.mvps.org/database/corrupt.html>

It's not clear from your description, so if I get this wrong send a more
complete description of your setup.

Your OS is installed on drive A, and you are asking if you can run Office
from drive B. Yes, but it could be problematic.

Office needs to be installed in either the root application folder or the
User's application folder. If not then you will have problems updating. Your
Entourage data is stored in your Documents folder. You can alias it out,
but be sure you know what you are doing.
